A usurer is someone who lends money and charges very high interest — so high that people think it is greedy or cruel. The word is old and heavy with judgement: you never call someone a usurer as a neutral job title, the way you would say 'banker'. It carries centuries of history, because for a long time in Christian Europe charging any interest at all was treated as a sin, so 'usurer' was one of the ugliest names you could give a man. Today you meet it mostly in old books, in history lessons, and in angry writing about loan sharks and payday lenders. The everyday words now are 'loan shark' or just 'moneylender'. Say it 'YOO-zher-er'.
