    Uptown means the part of a city away from the middle, or movement in that direction. It is mainly American English, and it is really only alive as a word because of New York. In Manhattan the streets are numbered, and the numbers get bigger as you go north — so going uptown means going north, towards the higher numbers, and going downtown means going south towards the lower ones. Because the uptown parts of Manhattan have long included expensive neighbourhoods, the word picked up a second flavour: rich, smart, elegant. That is the meaning in 'uptown girl' — not simply a girl who lives north, but one from a wealthy world. The word works as an adverb ('we walked uptown'), as an adjective ('an uptown apartment', 'uptown tastes'), and as a noun ('she lives in uptown Charlotte'). In other American cities it may just mean a business or residential district away from downtown, and the rich meaning may be absent altogether. British people almost never say it; in Britain you go into town or into the city centre. Careful: uptown is not the opposite of 'out of town'. Both uptown and downtown are inside the city.

組成up (往上、往高處或往北) + town (城鎮). In old New York the settled part was at the southern tip of the island, so anything further along was 'up' the town.
