An uplighter is a lamp made so that its light goes up to the ceiling instead of down onto your desk or book. The light hits the ceiling, spreads out, and comes back down soft — so the room feels bright but nothing is glaring in your eyes. It is a word from the world of home design, lighting shops and hotels, not from everyday conversation. Most uplighters stand on the floor, tall and thin, in the corner of a living room; some are fixed to the wall. Its opposite is a downlighter, which points down, and shops selling lamps will use both words on the box. British English prefers 'uplighter'; American shops usually say 'uplight' or 'torchiere' for the tall floor kind. Because the word describes what the lamp does with the light rather than what it looks like, an uplighter can be cheap or expensive, modern or old-fashioned.
