1. 1

Without knowing it. You did something — and the whole time you had no idea what you were really doing. "He unwittingly helped the thieves by leaving the door open." "She unwittingly gave away the secret." Think of it as the word that removes blame from a verb. English gives you a small set of these: `accidentally` (you slipped, the result was not intended), `unintentionally` (you did not mean the result), and `unwittingly` (you did not even know the situation you were in). That last one is the special flavour here. If you unwittingly insulted someone, you were not and you were not sneaky — you simply did not know that what you said was rude. Because of that, it usually shows up in stories where someone else knows more than the person acting: scams, plots, spies, mistakes with big consequences. It carries a slight feeling that the truth came out later. Register: formal and mostly written. In ordinary talk a student is much safer with "I didn't know, so I…" or "without realizing it." But you will meet `unwittingly` constantly in news writing and in reading tests, so knowing it on sight matters more than using it. Position: it slips in front of the main verb — "he unwittingly signed," "they had unwittingly created a problem."

組成unwitting(不知情的)+ -ly(副詞字尾);也可以看成 un- + wittingly。核心還是那個古老的 wit「知道」。中古英語的拼法五花八門——unwityngly、unwitandly、unwetinglie 都出現過——因為當時英文還沒有固定的拼字規則。
