1. 1

Unwise means not based on good judgment — a choice that a sensible person can see is likely to end badly. Lending a large amount of money to someone you just met is unwise. Sending an angry email at midnight is unwise. Climbing a mountain in is unwise. Notice what the word does NOT say. It does not say you are stupid; it says this particular decision was poorly judged. That gentleness is exactly why English speakers reach for it. "It would be unwise to tell your boss that" is a real warning, but it leaves you your dignity — which is why teachers, doctors, lawyers and polite colleagues use it constantly. In Chinese terms it works more like 不明智 than 笨. It is usually about decisions and actions, not people. We say an unwise decision, an unwise investment, an unwise remark. Calling a person unwise is possible but sounds old and rather grand, like something from a story about a king. A very common shape is "It would be unwise to…" — a soft, forward-looking piece of advice. And people often make it even softer: "it might be unwise", "it would perhaps be unwise". When you hear that much padding, listen carefully. The speaker usually means "please don't do that." One last honest note: unwise is a judgement about how things looked beforehand, with the information you had. A decision can be unwise and still turn out fine — you were lucky, not right.
