Untitled means a work of art has no name. A painting, a song, a poem, a film, a document — if nobody gave it a title, it is untitled.

There is a nice twist here. In art galleries, Untitled is written with a capital U and used as if it were the title: Untitled, 1962. So the label announcing that there is no title becomes the label on the wall. Artists sometimes choose this on purpose, because a title would tell you what to think, and they want you to look first. So untitled can mean 'not named yet' or 'deliberately left unnamed', and only the situation tells you which.

You also meet it every day on a computer. Open a new document and it is called Untitled or Untitled-1 until you save it with a real name. For many students this is the first place they ever see the word.

It normally describes creative work, not ordinary objects — an untitled box or an untitled dog would sound odd. Stay with art, writing, music, film, and files.
