Behaving unfairly in a game or competition — and more often, behaving in a way that is technically allowed but mean-spirited: time-wasting, refusing to shake hands, celebrating in a rival's face, taking advantage when an opponent is hurt. That is the heart of it: unsporting is less about breaking rules than about breaking the spirit of the thing. Because of that, it stretches easily out of sport into ordinary life — an unsporting way to win an argument, an unsporting question. It is a British-sounding word and a slightly old-fashioned one, connected to a whole idea of 'fair play'. In modern sports commentary you will hear unsportsmanlike more often (especially in American English, where 'unsportsmanlike conduct' is a real penalty), and unsporting can also mean simply 'a bad loser about a joke' — 'oh, don't be unsporting, have a go'.
