Ugly in a way that spoils the look of a place or a thing — something you wish were not there. Unsightly is mostly about surfaces and surroundings rather than about people's faces: an unsightly stain on the carpet, unsightly rubbish behind the shops, unsightly wires across the ceiling, unsightly on a beautiful old building. There is a small complaint built into it. When someone says 'those bins are unsightly', they are not just describing; they are saying somebody should move them. That is why the word lives in the language of neighbours, city councils, landlords, and — very heavily — advertising: skin creams and clinics love to talk about 'unsightly spots', 'unsightly hair', 'unsightly veins', because the word makes an ordinary body thing sound like a problem you should pay to remove. Knowing that helps you read those ads. It is formal and old-fashioned; in normal conversation you would just say 'ugly' or 'it looks awful'. It is an adjective only — there is no verb, and the adverb form barely exists.

組成un-（不）+ sightly（好看的、順眼的）。sightly 是 sight（視覺、景象）加上 -ly，古英語裡意思是「看起來舒服的」。有趣的是 sightly 現在幾乎沒人用了，只剩下否定的 unsightly 還活著。
