1. 1

Your eyes are open, but nothing is registering. Unseeing describes a person, or more often a person's eyes or stare, that is pointed at the world while the mind is somewhere else entirely — lost in thought, in shock, in grief, or simply exhausted. Someone staring unseeing out of a train window is looking straight at the fields and taking in none of them. This is a literary word: novels and careful writing use it, ordinary conversation does not. If you said it at a dinner table it would sound like you were reading aloud from a book. It is not a medical word for blindness, though writers sometimes stretch it that way; a blind person's eyes might be called unseeing in poetry, but the ordinary word for that is simply 'blind'. Note the shape it usually takes: 'her unseeing eyes', 'he sat unseeing', 'staring unseeing at the wall'.

    視而不見的、目光空洞的。中文的「視而不見」很貼近:眼睛看著,心思根本不在那裡。文學用語,日常口語不會這樣講。

組成un-(不)+ seeing(see 的現在分詞,「正在看見」)。有趣的地方在於:不是「沒在看」,而是「眼睛在看、卻沒看見」——英文用 see(看見、意識到)而不是 look(望向),差別就在這裡。

  • seethe root verb — and note see means 'take in', not just 'point your eyes at'
  • unseenalso un- + see, but means 'not noticed by others' — the opposite direction
