1. 1

Not written down, and so not kept. It works two ways, and they feel quite different.

Not written down, and so not kept沒有被寫下來,所以也就沒有被保存下來。 It works two ways, and they feel quite different它有兩種用法,而且感覺相當不同。

The first is about paperwork and history: facts, deaths, births, sales, working hours that nobody entered in a book or a system, so no trace of them survives. "Many of the deaths went unrecorded." "Much of the work done by women in that period is unrecorded." Used this way the word often carries a quiet sadness or a quiet accusation — someone should have written it down and did not, and now that part of the past is simply gone.

The first is about paperwork and history第一種是關於書面紀錄和歷史: facts, deaths, births, sales, working hours that nobody entered in a book or a system事實、死亡、出生、銷售、工作時數,沒有人把它們記進一本簿子或一個系統裡, so no trace of them survives所以完全沒有留下痕跡。 "Many of the deaths went unrecorded."『Many of the deaths went unrecorded.(很多死亡都沒有被記錄下來。)』 "Much of the work done by women in that period is unrecorded."『Much of the work done by women in that period is unrecorded.(那個時期女性做的很多工作都沒有被記錄下來。)』 Used this way the word often carries a quiet sadness or a quiet accusation用這種方式使用時,這個詞常常帶著一種安靜的哀傷、或安靜的指控—— someone should have written it down and did not本來應該有人把它寫下來卻沒有寫, and now that part of the past is simply gone而現在那部分的過去就這樣消失了。

The second is about sound and film: music, a performance, a conversation that was never captured on tape, disc, or file. "The band played the song for years but it stayed unrecorded until 1998." "That part of the meeting was unrecorded." Watch the very common pattern go unrecorded.

The second is about sound and film第二種是關於聲音和影像: music, a performance, a conversation that was never captured on tape, disc, or file音樂、一場表演、一段對話,從來沒有被錄進磁帶、光碟或檔案裡。 "The band played the song for years but it stayed unrecorded until 1998."『The band played the song for years but it stayed unrecorded until 1998.(這個樂團演奏這首歌很多年了,但一直到1998年才被錄下來。)』 "That part of the meeting was unrecorded."『That part of the meeting was unrecorded.(會議的那部分沒有被錄下來。)』 Watch the very common pattern go unrecorded注意這個很常見的句型go unrecorded。

English likes go with these un- participles — go , go , go unanswered, go unrecorded — and it means "to happen without anyone doing the thing." It is more natural than "was unrecorded" in most sentences, and it is worth learning as a set phrase rather than word by word.

English likes go with these un- participles英文喜歡把go放在這些un-開頭的分詞前面—— go unnoticed, go unpunished, go unanswered, go unrecordedgo unnoticed(沒被注意到)、go unpunished(沒被處罰)、go unanswered(沒被回應)、go unrecorded(沒被記錄下來)—— and it means "to happen without anyone doing the thing."意思是『在沒有人做那件事的情況下發生』。 It is more natural than "was unrecorded" in most sentences在大部分句子裡它比『was unrecorded』更自然, and it is worth learning as a set phrase rather than word by word值得把它當成一整組固定用法來學,而不是一個字一個字去學。

組成un- (not) + recorded. Record comes from Latin recordari, "to call back to mind, to remember," built on re- (again) and cor / cordis, the heart — because for the Romans the heart was where memory lived. So something unrecorded was never called back to mind, never set down where memory could reach it later.
