Not made to suffer any consequence for something wrong. What makes this word special is the company it keeps: it lives almost entirely in the pattern "go unpunished". You will hear "The crime went unpunished", "He should not go unpunished", far more often than "an unpunished crime". That verb `go` is doing something interesting — it means "stay in that state, with nobody in" — and English uses it for a small family of words about things nobody dealt with: go , go unanswered, go unpaid, go unheard. Learn the group together and you get several words for the price of one. Feeling: this word almost always carries a complaint. Nobody says something went unpunished happily; it is the word of a person who thinks justice failed. It also turns up in a well-known bitter joke — "No good deed goes unpunished" — meaning that if you help someone, you will somehow suffer for it.
組成un- (not) + punished. punish came through French from a Latin root meaning penalty — the same root that gives us penalty and penal. Behind that sits an even older idea of payment: a punishment is a debt the wrongdoer pays.
