An unpaved road, path, or yard has no hard covering on top — no asphalt, no concrete, no bricks or stones laid down. You are walking or driving straight on whatever is underneath: dirt, gravel, sand, mud. It is the plain opposite of 'paved', and it is used almost only about surfaces you travel on — roads, streets, tracks, driveways, parking areas, sometimes a courtyard or an airstrip. The word itself is neutral and slightly official; you meet it in news reports, travel writing, government reports about villages and rural areas ('most of the roads there are still unpaved'). In ordinary talk people usually say 'dirt road' or 'gravel road' instead, which is friendlier and also tells you what the surface actually is. Note what unpaved does NOT promise: it does not mean the road is bad or unusable — a well-kept gravel road can be perfectly fine to drive on — though in practice the word does often carry a hint of 'rough, dusty, gets muddy when it rains, slow going', because that is what such roads are usually like. It also does not mean 'not yet finished'; some roads are unpaved on purpose and always will be. One more thing: it is almost always used before a noun ('an unpaved road'), and it sounds a bit odd standing after 'be' — people say 'the road isn't paved' far more often than 'the road is unpaved', though both are correct.
