Not showing love or support for your own country — or, more sharply, seeming to act against it. A patriot loves their country, so unpatriotic describes someone who refuses to stand for the national anthem, who buys foreign goods when local ones are struggling, who criticises their government while a war is on. What you really need to know is that this is almost never a neutral description. It is an accusation. Politicians throw the word at each other; newspapers use it about people who disagree with them. Calling someone unpatriotic is a way of saying 'you have betrayed us all', and the person accused almost always argues back — usually with the line that criticising your country IS a form of loving it. So when you meet the word, ask who is speaking and what they want. It usually tells you more about the speaker's politics than about the person being described. Note the shape: un- + patriotic, not 'non-patriotic' or 'antipatriotic'. And there is a difference in strength between simply not caring about your country (which people might call unpatriotic) and actively working against it (that is 'treason', a much heavier word).
