To unionize is for workers to form a union at their workplace, or to join one. It works two ways.
To unionizeUnionize is for workers to form a union at their workplace意思是工人在自己工作的地方組成工會, or to join one或是加入一個既有的工會。It works two ways它有兩種用法。
Workers can unionize by themselves — "the drivers voted to unionize" — and here no object follows the verb. Or an organiser can unionize a workplace, meaning they get the workers there signed up: "they spent two years trying to unionize the warehouse".
Workers工人 can unionize by themselves可以自己unionize(組織工會)— "the drivers voted to unionize"「the drivers voted to unionize」(司機們投票決定組工會) — and here在這裡 no object follows the verb動詞後面不接受詞。Or或者 an organiser一個組織者 can unionize a workplace可以unionize一個工作場所, meaning也就是說 they get the workers there signed up讓那裡的工人都加入工會: "they spent two years trying to unionize the warehouse"「they spent two years trying to unionize the warehouse」(他們花了兩年想讓這間倉庫組工會)。
You very often meet it in the passive, "the factory is unionized", which describes the settled state rather than the act. Because unions are a fighting matter, the word usually shows up in a story with two sides in it: workers trying to unionize, and a company trying to stop them.
You very often meet it in the passive你很常會看到它的被動式, "the factory is unionized"「the factory is unionized」(這間工廠已經工會化了), which描述的是 describes the settled state rather than the act是一個已經定型的狀態,而不是那個動作本身。Because unions are a fighting matter因為工會是個會引起對立的議題, the word這個字 usually shows up in a story with two sides in it通常會出現在有兩方立場的故事裡: workers trying to unionize工人想組工會, and a company trying to stop them而公司想阻止他們。
The British spelling is unionise; American writing uses the z. Do not confuse the shape of this word with words like "realize" or "recognize" in one respect — with unionize, the -ize really is doing its job of "make into", which is why the meaning is so easy to read off the parts.
The British spelling英式拼法 is unionise是unionise; American writing美式寫法 uses the z用z。Do not confuse the shape of this word不要把這個字的長相 with words like "realize" or "recognize" in one respect跟「realize」或「recognize」這類字搞混,在一點上要注意 — with unionize在unionize這個字裡, the -ize really is doing its job of "make into"「-ize」真的就是在做「變成……」這個功能, which is why the meaning is so easy to read off the parts這也是為什麼它的意思這麼容易從字的組成看出來。
組成union(工會)+ -ize(使成為、變成)。The -ize ending makes a verb meaning "turn something into this": modern → modernize, standard → standardize, union → unionize.
