    Not fashionable, not cool, behind what young people are doing. 'Hip' means in touch with what is new and stylish; put un- in front and you get the opposite. This is a light, casual, slightly joking word. It is usually about taste rather than about clothes only — the music you like, the words you use, the phone you still carry, the way you dance at a wedding. It is much softer than 'ugly' or 'stupid'; calling something unhip says 'the cool people have moved on from this', not 'this is bad'. People often use it about themselves, : 'I know it's terribly unhip, but I still buy CDs.' Said that way it means 'I don't care what's in fashion,' and there is a little pride hiding in it. It can also describe a person who does not understand young culture at all — 'my unhip dad'. One honest note: 'hip' itself now sounds a bit dated, so 'unhip' has a gentle old-fashioned flavour to it, which is quietly funny. Younger speakers today are more likely to say 'cringe', 'not it', or just 'so 2010'. You will still meet 'unhip' in newspapers and in the speech of people over about forty.
