Uneconomical describes a way of doing something that wastes money, time, materials, or fuel — the cost is too high for what you get back. An old car that drinks petrol is uneconomical to run. Making just fifty copies of a book is uneconomical, because setting up the machines costs the same whether you print fifty or fifty thousand. Very often it appears as 'uneconomical to do something': uneconomical to repair, uneconomical to produce, uneconomical to keep open. Now the part students really need. English has two close adjectives from economy and they do not mean the same thing. Economic is about the economy — the money system of a country: economic growth, economic policy. Economical is about not wasting — thrifty, good value: an economical car, an economical cook. So uneconomical is the opposite of economical, meaning wasteful. Its partner uneconomic exists too and tends to mean 'not profitable, not worth doing as a business'. In real use these two blur into each other and even native writers swap them, so do not panic about the line; but do keep economic and economical apart, because that pair genuinely changes your meaning. One more thing: this word judges the method or the thing, not the person. A machine can be uneconomical. Calling a person uneconomical sounds strange.
