Unease is a quiet, uncomfortable feeling that something is not right. It is not sharp fear — nobody is screaming — it is the low, background worry you carry in your body when a situation feels wrong and you may not even be able to say why. A student waiting outside the teacher's office feels unease. A country where prices are rising fast has a general unease about the future. Two things are worth noticing. First, it is uncountable: you feel unease, or a sense of unease, or a growing unease — but not 'an unease' and not 'uneases'. Second, it sits high on the formality scale. It belongs to writing, news reports, and careful speech. Talking with friends, people say things like 'I felt uneasy about it' or 'something felt off' far more often than 'I felt unease'. The adjective uneasy is the everyday member of this family; the noun unease is its dressed-up relative. You will also meet it in fixed pairs: a sense of unease, a feeling of unease, growing unease, deep unease, public unease. There is an old verb unease too, meaning to make someone uncomfortable, but you will almost never meet it — modern English uses the adjective uneasy or the verb unsettle instead.
