Given or done with no conditions attached — no "if", no "only when", no strings. If something is unconditional, it does not depend on the other side doing anything in return, and it cannot be taken back because a rule was broken. Two homes for this word. In everyday emotional talk, the famous partner is love: *unconditional love* means I love you whatever you do, whether you succeed or fail. Parents, family, sometimes friendship. In law, business, and it is more technical and much harder-edged: *unconditional surrender* (you stop fighting and get promised nothing), *an unconditional offer* (a place at the university with no exam-score requirement), *unconditional support*, *an unconditional guarantee*, *unconditional release* from prison. Notice the two feelings are quite different — the loving one is warm, the legal one is often about one side having no power to bargain. There is also a rarer noun use in logic and mathematics, but a is very unlikely to meet it. The everyday opposite is *conditional*, and in real life most things are conditional; that is exactly why the word carries weight when someone uses it.

組成un- (not) + conditional (depending on conditions). Conditional comes from condition, from Latin condicio — an agreement, the terms two people settle on. So: not tied to the terms. The un- traces back through Old English un-, Proto-Germanic *un-, all the way to Proto-Indo-European *né 'not' — the same ancient 'no' sitting inside hundreds of English words.
