Putting up with something hard or unpleasant without saying a word about it. This word is nearly always a compliment, and it carries a picture with it: a person who is tired, in pain, poor, or badly treated, and who simply keeps going. That is why you meet it so often in writing about mothers, nurses, soldiers, farmers, and old people — and in obituaries, where someone is described as bearing a long illness uncomplaining. Because the picture behind it is one of quiet suffering, it can also be used of animals ('the uncomplaining old dog') and even of machines that keep working without trouble. Be aware that some modern writers use it with a shadow of criticism, especially about workers or women — an uncomplaining employee may simply be one who has learned that complaining changes nothing. Same word, but the sympathy in it can turn into sadness. It sits before a noun most of the time, and it belongs to careful writing rather than daily chat.
