- 1
To straighten out from a wound-up, circular shape — or to make something do that. It works both ways: you can uncoil a rope ('She uncoiled the hose and turned on the tap'), or the thing can uncoil by itself ('The snake uncoiled slowly in the sun'). Long, flexible things are what uncoil: rope, wire, hose, cable, a spring, a snake's body. Because a snake is ready to strike and an uncoiling one is relaxing, writers use the word to suggest tension letting go — 'He felt the fear uncoil in his chest', 'Her body uncoiled from the chair'. That figurative use is common in novels. The opposite is 'coil' (to wind up), and 'uncoil' always implies the thing was wound up first.
