Growing or spreading with nothing stopping it — used when the thing growing is bad. 'If the fire is left unchecked, it will reach the houses', 'unchecked corruption', 'The disease spread unchecked through the village.' Two things about how it is used. First, it nearly always sits after the noun or verb, not before: 'go unchecked', 'run unchecked', 'left unchecked' are the set phrases you will meet. Second, it carries a warning: the speaker is saying 'someone should be stopping this'. Here 'check' has its older meaning of holding something back, like a dam checking a river — nothing to do with checking your homework. A separate, less common use does mean 'not examined' ('unchecked baggage', 'unchecked facts'), but the growing-out-of-control sense is the one you will meet most.

- On a crossword puzzle grid, you shouldn't encounter any unchecked squares – white squares that are used in an Across entry but not in a Down entry, or vice versa. If unchecked squares were allowed, that would make your life harder – you'd have only one opportunity to figure out what belongs in that square. Instead, you always get two chances to fill a square: by solving the Across clue or the Down clue.
