Unbridled describes a feeling or behaviour that nobody is holding back, and it usually carries a warning. Common partners: unbridled anger, unbridled greed, unbridled ambition, unbridled power, unbridled capitalism. The picture inside it is a horse: a bridle is the leather straps on a horse's head that let the rider steer and stop it, so an unbridled horse is one that runs wherever it likes with nobody in control. That is why the word is usually a criticism — the thing is not being steered by anyone. There is one warm exception you will meet often: 'unbridled joy' and 'unbridled enthusiasm', where the lack of control is delightful rather than dangerous. It is a formal, written word, mostly used in front of a noun. Compare , which is about size with no edge, and neutral or positive; unbridled is about control, and the missing control is the point.
組成un- + bridled, from bridle, the head-straps used to control a horse. Bridled means 'fitted with a bridle, under control'; unbridled means the straps are off. Here un- can be read either way — 'not bridled' or 'with the bridle taken off' — and both readings land in the same place.
