The adverb of unashamed: doing something openly, with no attempt to hide it and no apology. It usually sits before an adjective or a verb — "unashamedly commercial", "unashamedly copied the design", "she unashamedly cried at the ending". Its favourite home is criticism and reviews, where writers use it to describe a work that knows exactly what it is: "an unashamedly silly comedy", "unashamedly sentimental". There, it is a defence as much as a description — the writer is saying the film is not trying to be clever, so don't judge it as if it were. When it is used about a person's behaviour, the tone follows the behaviour, exactly as with unashamed: unashamedly honest is warm, unashamedly rude is not. In everyday speech Taiwanese learners will hear "openly", "without any embarrassment", or "straight up" far more often; this word belongs to writing and to slightly performed speech.
