Ugandan is the word for anything belonging to Uganda, a country in East Africa that sits between the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Kenya, with Lake Victoria on its southern edge and Kampala as its capital. It works two ways. As an adjective it describes things: Ugandan coffee, a Ugandan passport, the Ugandan government. As a noun it names a person: she is a Ugandan, or the plural, three Ugandans. Both are always written with a capital U, like every word made from a country's name. A little history helps you read it: Uganda was ruled by Britain until 1962, then went through very hard years, especially under Idi Amin in the 1970s, and things improved from the mid-1980s onward. English is one of its official languages, so you will meet Ugandan English writers and speakers. One caution about the noun: for a person, the adjective form is often kinder and more natural — 'a Ugandan student', 'my Ugandan colleague' — because naming someone only by their nationality can sound like you are labelling them.
