UCAS is the official British organisation that handles applications to universities and colleges in the UK. In Britain, a student who wants a degree does not send a separate application to each university. They fill in one form on the UCAS website — their grades, their subjects, a personal statement about why they want the course, and a reference from a teacher — and choose up to five courses. UCAS passes that one form to all of them and carries the answers back. So the name works like a place in students' lives: 'my UCAS form', 'the UCAS deadline', 'I've sent off my UCAS'. UCAS also runs Clearing, the system in August that matches students whose exam results were higher or lower than expected with courses that still have places. Note the pronunciation: unlike UAE or UAV, you do not say the letters one by one — you say it as a word, 'YOU-cass'. It is a proper name for one organisation, so it takes no 'the' in normal use ('I applied through UCAS'). This is a British thing only; it has nothing to do with applying to universities in the US, Taiwan or anywhere else.
