An American company that rents out trucks, vans, and trailers to ordinary people who are moving house, plus the boxes, tape, and trolleys that go with it. The idea in the name is that you do the work yourself instead of paying a moving company: you drive the truck, you carry the sofa. In the United States the brand is so ordinary that people use the name for the vehicle itself — 'We rented a U-Haul', 'There's a U-Haul parked outside' — the way people say a brand name when they mean the thing. Because moving house in America so often means a U-Haul, the word carries a whole picture with it: students leaving for college, a couple moving in together, someone starting over in a new city. It is very American, and outside North America many people will not know it. Note the capital U, the hyphen, and the capital H.
