Cruel and unfair use of power by a ruler or government, where the ruler does whatever they want and people have no real say or protection. Can also be used, more loosely, for any situation where one person or thing controls others , even a small one — like joking about "the tyranny of the clock," meaning being ruled by time.

組成From Greek "tyrannos," meaning a ruler who took power without inheriting it. It didn't always mean cruel at first, but the word came to mean specifically harsh, unfair rule.
