A typhoon is a very large, powerful storm that forms over warm ocean water and brings strong winds and heavy rain — it's exactly the same kind of storm as a hurricane, just a different name used depending on where in the world it happens. 'Typhoon' is the name used in the western Pacific and East Asia, including around Taiwan and Japan, while 'hurricane' is used in the Atlantic and eastern Pacific, and 'cyclone' is used near Australia and India. So the storm itself works the same way everywhere; only the name changes by region.
