A twosome is a pair of people doing something together — two people who work as a team, play a game together, or are simply always seen with each other. The word is a little old-fashioned and a little playful. You are most likely to meet it in golf, where a twosome is two players going round the course together, and in older writing about dancing or parties. Outside sport, people usually say it with a smile, often about a couple who are romantically involved, or about two friends who are inseparable: "those two are quite a twosome." It is not a formal word and it is not a cold, neutral word like 'pair'. If you said 'a twosome of engineers' in a report, it would sound wrong — the word carries warmth or teasing. Note that it can describe a thing as well as people in older use, meaning 'done by two', as in 'a twosome dance', but that use is now rare. In modern everyday English, 'pair', 'couple' or 'the two of them' is far more common, and a student can go years without needing to produce 'twosome' — but it is worth recognising when it appears.
