A threesome is a group of three people, or sometimes three things, doing something together. The plain meaning is completely innocent: three playing a round, three friends who always sit together, three singers in a group. Sport — golf especially — is where the word is most at home. BUT you should know this: in everyday modern English, threesome very often means three people having sex together, and for many speakers that is the FIRST meaning that jumps to mind. That second meaning is not in the word's history; it grew on top. So the word is safe in a clear context ("our golf threesome") and risky in a vague one ("we had a nice threesome last night"). If you just mean three people, "the three of us" or "a group of three" is safer and sounds more natural anyway. Compare (a pair) and (four), which carry much less of that colour — though catches a little of it too.
組成three + -some. The ending -some here makes a noun meaning "a group of this many" — it comes from an old word for "same, together." You see it only in counting words: twosome, threesome, foursome.
