The two-step is an old partner dance, and also the music you dance it to. Two people hold each other and move across the floor with long sliding steps, quick-quick-slow, travelling round the room rather than staying in one spot. It was very popular in America around a hundred years ago, and it survives today mostly in country music: 'the Texas two-step' is a real thing people still do in country dance halls and at weddings in the American South. Say 'do the two-step' or 'dance the two-step'. It can be used as a verb too — 'they two-stepped across the floor' — though that sounds a little folksy. Now, honestly: your students are far more likely to meet 'two-step' in a completely different, boring, modern sense — 'two-step verification', the security thing on your phone where you type a password and then a code. That is just 'two' + 'step' meaning two , nothing to do with dancing, and it is by far the most common way you will see these words in daily life. The dance meaning is the one dictionaries list first because it is older and fixed as one noun; the verification meaning is newer and everywhere.
