A turntablist is a DJ who treats the record player as a musical instrument rather than as a machine for playing songs. Instead of simply putting on one record after another, this person works two turntables with their hands — pushing a record back and forth under the needle to make the scratching sound, cutting between two copies of the same record to repeat one drum break, dropping in a single word from an old song — so that what comes out is new music, made live. The word comes out of hip-hop, and it is a word of respect: calling someone a turntablist rather than a DJ says they have real skill with their hands and are performing, not just choosing songs. The art itself is called turntablism, and there are world championships for it. It is fairly specialist vocabulary — natural among people who care about hip-hop, unusual in everyday conversation — and it belongs to the era of vinyl records, so today's laptop DJs are not normally called turntablists even when they scratch with software.
