A turn-on is something that you, and in nearly every real use, sexually. It is a countable noun: "Confidence is a real turn-on." "That's a big turn-on for him." The opposite is turnoff (or turn-off), something that kills the attraction: "Bad manners are a total turnoff." Turnoff is actually the more useful of the pair for a , because it has stretched into ordinary non-sexual use — people say a boring teacher or a long form is a turnoff, meaning it makes you lose interest.

A turn-on is就是 something that excites you一樣讓你興奮起來的東西,and in nearly every real use而且在幾乎每一次真實的使用裡,sexually都是性方面的。It is a countable noun它是可數名詞:“Confidence is a real turn-on.”「自信真的很讓人心動。」、“That's a big turn-on for him.”「那對他來說非常有吸引力。」。The opposite is turnoff (or turn-off)相反詞是 turnoff(或 turn-off),something that kills the attraction一樣把吸引力澆熄的東西:“Bad manners are a total turnoff.”「沒禮貌完全讓人倒胃口。」。for a learner對學習者來說,Turnoff is actually the more useful of the pair其實是這一對裡比較有用的那個,because it has stretched into ordinary non-sexual use因為它已經伸進了平常、跟性無關的用法——people say人們會說 a boring teacher or a long form無聊的老師或很長的表單,is a turnoff是個 turnoff, meaning it makes you lose interest意思是它讓你失去興趣。

Turn-on has stretched far less; it stays mostly sexual, so if you say something at work is "a real turn-on" people will hear the sexual meaning and it will be awkward. This is the honest, useful point about the word: recognise it, be slow to produce it.

Turn-on has stretched far less伸展得少得多;it stays mostly sexual它大致停在性的意思上,so if you say所以如果你說 something at work工作上的某樣東西,is “a real turn-on”是 “a real turn-on”,people will hear the sexual meaning大家聽到的會是性的那個意思,and it will be awkward場面會很尷尬。This is the honest, useful point about the word關於這個字,最老實、最有用的一點是:recognise it認得它,be slow to produce it但慢一點自己拿出來用。

Note the shape carefully. The noun is written with a or as one word, turn-on / turnon, and the stress goes on TURN. The verb is two separate words with no : "You turn me on." Do not confuse either of them with the everyday verb turn on meaning to start a machine — "turn on the light", "turn on the air ". Same two words, completely innocent, and by far the most common meaning; only the noun form carries the sexual sense.

Note the shape carefully仔細看它的形狀。The noun is written名詞寫成 with a hyphen or as one word帶連字號或連成一個字,turn-on / turnon, and the stress goes on TURN重音落在 TURN 上。The verb is動詞是 two separate words分開的兩個字,with no hyphen不加連字號:“You turn me on.”。either of them這兩個,with the everyday verb turn on和日常動詞 turn on,Do not confuse都不要搞混,meaning to start a machine那個意思是啟動機器——“turn on the light”開燈、“turn on the air conditioner”開冷氣。Same two words同樣的兩個字,completely innocent完全清白,and by far the most common meaning而且是最最常見的意思;only the noun form只有名詞形,carries the sexual sense帶著性的意思。

組成Made from the phrasal verb turn on. English does this a lot: take a two-word verb and push the stress onto the first word to make a noun. Compare a checkup from check up, a breakdown from break down, a takeaway from take away.
