A turbocharged engine or car has a turbocharger fitted — a small turbine that uses the hot exhaust gas rushing out of the engine to force more air back in. More air means more fuel can burn, and that means more power from an engine of the same size. So a small turbocharged engine can be as strong as a much bigger ordinary one, which is why nearly every new car sold now is turbocharged. This is the plain technical adjective, used in car reviews, sales talk, and by mechanics. It also has a second, figurative life, and that one is common in newspapers and business writing: if something is turbocharged, it has been given a sudden big boost. 'A turbocharged economy', 'turbocharged growth', 'the new law turbocharged demand for solar panels'. That use is lively and a bit journalistic — fine in an article, slightly much in a careful report. As a verb, 'to turbocharge something' works the same way, literally for engines and figuratively for anything you want to say was made dramatically faster or stronger.
