Tunis is the capital city of Tunisia, a country on the north coast of Africa. It sits in the northeast of the country, right by the Mediterranean Sea, and it is by far the biggest city there — the place where the government sits and where most business happens. Two things people usually connect with it. One is the old centre, called the , a maze of narrow streets and markets that is hundreds of years old. The other is : the famous ancient city that fought long wars against Rome stood just outside modern Tunis, and its ruins are there today, close enough to visit in an afternoon. So when a history book says '', the place it means is now a suburb of Tunis. Always a capital letter, and no 'the' — you say 'in Tunis', 'to Tunis', the way you say 'in Taipei'. Note the two words look almost the same: Tunis is the city, Tunisia is the country around it.
組成From Arabic تُونِس (tūnis). Where that name itself came from is not settled — some scholars link it to a Berber root meaning 'to lie down' or 'to spend the night', so 'a camp'; others link it to Tanit, a goddess of ancient Carthage. Both are guesses.
