Two things people usually connect with it人們通常會聯想到兩件事。One is the old walled centre, called the medina一個是舊城牆內、叫做medina的老城區, a maze of narrow streets and markets that is hundreds of years old是一個有好幾百年歷史、街道狹窄、市集錯綜複雜的地方。The other is Carthage另一個是Carthage(迦太基): the famous ancient city that fought long wars against Rome stood just outside modern Tunis那座曾經跟羅馬打過長期戰爭的著名古城,就座落在現代Tunis的外圍, and its ruins are there today, close enough to visit in an afternoon它的遺跡到今天都還在,一個下午就能去參觀。So when a history book says 'Carthage'所以當歷史書提到'Carthage'時, the place it means is now a suburb of Tunis它指的地方現在其實是Tunis的一個郊區

Always a capital letter, and no 'the' — you say 'in Tunis', 'to Tunis', the way you say 'in Taipei'. Note the two words look almost the same: Tunis is the city, Tunisia is the country around it.

Always a capital letter永遠要大寫, and no 'the'而且前面不加'the' — you say 'in Tunis', 'to Tunis'你會說'in Tunis'、'to Tunis', the way you say 'in Taipei'就像你說'in Taipei'一樣。Note the two words look almost the same要注意這兩個字看起來幾乎一樣: Tunis is the city, Tunisia is the country around itTunis是城市,Tunisia是周圍的那個國家

組成From Arabic تُونِس (tūnis). Where that name itself came from is not settled — some scholars link it to a Berber root meaning 'to lie down' or 'to spend the night', so 'a camp'; others link it to Tanit, a goddess of ancient Carthage. Both are guesses.
