A tulip is a spring flower shaped like a cup: six smooth curving up and inward on one straight stem, usually one flower per stem, and the leaves are long and grey-green. They come in almost every colour — red, yellow, pink, white, deep purple that looks nearly black — and they grow from a bulb, a fat brown thing like a small onion that you plant in autumn and forget about until spring. Tulips mean Holland to most people, and the Dutch fields of striped colour in April are a famous sight. There is a history behind that: in the 1630s tulip bulbs in Holland were for the price of a house, and then the price collapsed. English speakers still say tulip mania or tulip bubble when they talk about people paying mad money for something because everyone else is — you will meet this in business news about crypto or shares, far away from any garden. Two small things about the word itself. Cut tulips keep growing in the vase and bend towards the light, so a bunch that was straight yesterday is leaning today; people find this either charming or . And tulip is used for cup-shaped things by likeness — a tulip glass for beer, tulip-shaped lamps.
