    Made of tubes, or shaped like a tube — long, round, and hollow in the middle. A tubular steel chair is one built from metal ; tubular bells are the hanging metal tubes an orchestra strikes; a worm has a tubular body. The word is common in describing furniture, machines, buildings and living things, and it is neutral and slightly technical — an engineer's or a designer's word rather than a one. Hollow is the part students forget: if it is round but solid all through, like a pencil lead or a broom handle, 'cylindrical' is the better word. There is also a slang sense worth knowing when you watch old films: in 1980s American surfing talk 'tubular' meant excellent, wonderful — a great wave curls over into a tube around the , so the best were tubular. It sounds dated and comic now, the way 'radical' does.
