Taken from things that really happened, not made up. It goes in front of a noun — a true-life story, a true-life drama, a true-life adventure — and it is mostly the language of advertising: book covers, film posters, magazine headlines, TV listings. It carries a promise and a bit of excitement: 'this really happened to somebody'. Because of that, it usually attaches to dramatic material — crime, survival, romance, illness — not to plain factual writing. Nobody calls a science textbook true-life, even though it is true. Note also that 'true-life' does not mean every detail is exact; films sold this way are often 'based on' real events and change plenty. You will see 'true-to-life' too, but that is a different thing: it means 'realistic, like real life', and it can describe something invented.
true-life 指取材自真實發生過的事、而非虛構的，放在名詞前面，例如「a true-life story」、「a true-life drama」。它多半是廣告用語，常出現在書封、電影海報、雜誌標題或電視節目表上，帶著「這真的發生在某個人身上」的承諾，語氣有點刺激。因此它通常用在犯罪、求生、愛情或疾病這類戲劇性的題材，單純的事實文章很少會用。要注意，它並不代表每個細節都完全準確，這類電影常是「based on」真實事件改編，內容也常有許多更動。另一個很像的字是「true-to-life」，意思是寫實、貼近真實生活，所以虛構的東西也可以用它來形容。
