    Trouble-free means without problems. If a journey was trouble-free, nothing went wrong: no delays, no arguments, nothing broke. If a machine gives you trouble-free service for ten years, it never needed fixing.

    It is an adjective, and it usually sits in front of the noun: a trouble-free flight, trouble-free operation, ten trouble-free years. You can also put it after the verb be — "the installation was completely trouble-free" — though that is a little less common.

    Notice where you actually meet it. It lives in advertising and in reports much more than in conversation. Companies love it: trouble-free driving, trouble-free performance, trouble-free banking. When a friend tells you about their weekend, they will more likely say "it went really smoothly" or "no problems at all". So the word is fine to write, but if you use it in speech about a small everyday thing it can sound like you are reading from a .

    One quiet thing about it: because it is a promise, it is often used about the future or about a whole long stretch of time — which is exactly why sellers reach for it.
