    A trotter is a pig's foot, especially when it has been cooked and is eaten as food. You will usually see it in the plural — pig's trotters, or just trotters — because they are served more than one at a time.

    This is old, cheap, warming food in Britain: the parts of the animal that poor families used because nothing was wasted. Boiled or slowly cooked, they go soft and sticky. In the last twenty years chefs have brought them back onto expensive menus, so the word can now sound either very old-fashioned or very fashionable, depending on where you read it.

    For a student this is an easy idea with a strange word attached, because we eat this all the time — this is 豬腳. If you want to tell a British friend about 萬巒豬腳 or about the pork knuckle your grandmother makes, "pig's trotters" is the phrase that will make them see it.

    The word has other uses you may bump into: a horse that trots in racing is also called a trotter, and it can be a joking word for a person's own feet. But the food meaning is the one you will meet first.

組成trot (to run with quick short steps) + -er (the thing that does it). So a trotter is literally "the thing that trots" — the foot the animal runs on. English got there by naming the foot after the movement.
