The quality of being trite — the dullness a remark, idea or piece of writing has when it is worn out from overuse and sounds insincere. It is the noun you use when you want to name that quality and then say something about it: "the triteness of the lyrics", "a triteness that spoils an otherwise good film". Because it is a noun, it lets you weigh the fault: it can be complete or slight, forgivable or not. It is a critic's word — you will find it in book reviews, essays and academic writing far more than in conversation, where people simply say "it's such a cliché". Two things worth knowing. First, `triteness` names a fault of FRESHNESS, not of truth: the sentiment in a trite greeting card is usually perfectly true, and that is exactly why it has been printed so many times. Second, the word carries a hint of insincerity — the suggestion is that the speaker reached for a ready-made phrase because they did not care enough to find their own words. English also has `trivialness` and `triviality`, which sound close but mean unimportance; `triteness` is about staleness.
