A picture made of three panels joined side by side, so that the two outer ones can fold in over the middle one. It began in churches: a triptych stood on the altar, with the main scene in the centre and a related scene on each wing, and the wings could be shut on ordinary days and opened for a feast. That folding is the real point of the shape — old ones often have paintings on the outside of the wings too, for when they are closed. The word has spread well beyond religion. Modern artists make triptychs with no church meaning at all, and people now use the word for any work in three connected parts: three photographs hung together, three panels of a screen, even three novels or three films that tell one larger story. In that stretched use it just means "a thing in three parts that belong together". Say it TRIP-tik — the -ch is a k sound.
組成From Greek tri- "three" + ptychē "a fold" — literally "having three folds", which is exactly what the hinged panels do.
