A picture — painted, , or sometimes photographed — made in two parts, joined so the pair can close like a book. Churches used them a great deal: holy figures on the inside, a plain or protective outside when shut. Artists still make them: two panels meant to be read as one work, not two separate pictures that happen to hang together. The hinge and the two-ness are the point. You will meet the word in museums and art history; it is not everyday talk. A three-panel version has its own name.
