Trendspotting is the activity — noticing new fashions, new habits, or the way a situation is starting to move, and reporting it before it becomes obvious. It is an uncountable noun, so you say 'trendspotting is hard work' or 'a trendspotting agency', never 'a trendspotting' or 'two trendspottings'. The person who does it is a trendspotter. Most of the time the word belongs to business: companies do trendspotting so they can make the next popular product, and newspapers run trendspotting articles at the start of every year predicting what will be big. Because those predictions are so often wrong, the word carries a little smile in it — 'this year's trendspotting says brown is back' can be said with real belief or with mild doubt, and the tone of voice tells you which. It is also used as an adjective in front of a noun: 'a trendspotting report', 'her trendspotting column'.
