Trenchant describes criticism, comments, or writing that are sharp, clear, and — they go straight to the real point and do not it to protect anyone's feelings. A trenchant analysis cuts through the confusion and shows what is actually going on; a trenchant critic says the uncomfortable thing everyone else avoided. The word is mostly positive: it praises accuracy and courage, not . That is the difference from 'harsh' or 'cutting', which say the words hurt but not that they were right. Trenchant almost always carries the sense that the speaker was correct as well as blunt. It is a formal, written word — you find it in book reviews, editorials, and academic writing, describing criticism, commentary, observation, wit, analysis. People rarely call a person trenchant on their own; they call what the person said or wrote trenchant. Occasionally you will see it stretched to mean simply 'well defined and sharp-edged', which is closer to its old meaning of cutting.
