Traumatized describes a person (or animal) who has been shocked or hurt so badly that they are still carrying the damage. It is the past participle of , and in practice it behaves like an adjective: 'traumatized refugees', 'the dog was traumatized', 'she looked traumatized'. What it points to is a state, not an event — the person is still in it. A traumatized child may not sleep, may not speak about what happened, may flinch at sounds that remind them. That lasting quality is the whole meaning of the word; if the passed in an hour, 'traumatized' is the wrong word and 'shaken' or 'upset' is the right one. The phrase that follows it is almost always 'by': traumatized by the war, by the accident, by what she saw. And as with , young speakers use it jokingly for small horrors — 'I'm traumatized' after seeing something merely . That is play, and it is very common online, but it borrows its force from the serious meaning, so it does not belong in careful writing.
