Traumatic describes an experience so , painful, or upsetting that it keeps affecting you long after it is over — a car crash, a war, losing someone suddenly, being badly hurt by someone you trusted. The key idea is not just 'very bad' but 'bad in a way that leaves a mark'. The event ends; the damage does not. In medicine the word also keeps an older, physical meaning: a traumatic injury is a wound to the body, which is where 'trauma centre' in a hospital comes from. So the word covers both a wound in the flesh and a wound in the mind — and it was the physical meaning first. Now here is the honest part. In everyday speech people stretch this word a long way. 'That exam was traumatic.' 'Meeting his parents was traumatic.' Nobody means real lasting damage; they mean it was awful at the time. That use is completely normal in casual speech. But it makes the word weaker, and some people find it careless when others are talking about real trauma. When you are writing seriously, or talking to someone about something genuinely terrible, keep the strong meaning.
