Here is the part people forget: it no longer exists as a province. In 1994, after apartheid ended, the area was cut up into Gauteng, Mpumalanga, and part of North West. So it is now a historical name, still heard by older South Africans and still living on in things named after it — a plant called the Transvaal daisy, for example — but not a place you will find on a current map of provinces.
Here is the part people forget大家常忘記的是:it no longer exists as a province它已經不再是一個省了。In 1994, after apartheid ended1994年種族隔離結束後,the area was cut up into Gauteng, Mpumalanga, Limpopo and part of North West這個地區被拆分成豪登省、姆普馬蘭加省、林波波省,以及西北省的一部分。So it is now a historical name所以它現在只是一個歷史地名,still heard by older South Africans年長的南非人仍會提起,and still living on in things named after it也還留存在一些以它命名的事物裡——a plant called the Transvaal daisy例如一種叫做「德蘭士瓦雛菊」的植物,for example——but not a place you will find on a current map of provinces但在現在的省份地圖上已經找不到這個地方了。
組成trans- (Latin, 'across, on the far side of') + Vaal, the name of the Vaal River. So the name simply means 'across the Vaal' — the land on the other side of that river, seen from the point of view of the settlers coming from the south.
