A transistor is a tiny electronic part, usually made of a material called silicon, that can turn an electric signal on and off or make it stronger. Transistors sit inside almost every electronic device — phones, computers, radios — controlling the flow of electricity. Before computer chips, small portable radios were often just called 'transistors' or 'transistor radios,' because that new technology made them small enough to carry around.
