The state of being tranquil — a pleasant, settled calm. It is the noun of 'tranquil', uncountable, and it names the quality itself: the tranquillity of the countryside, disturbed the tranquillity of the afternoon, found tranquillity after years of stress. It works in two directions. Outwardly it is about a place or a moment being still and peaceful; inwardly it is about a mind at rest, free from worry — which is why you meet it constantly in writing about meditation, retreats, and religion. English also has some set phrases with it: 'peace and tranquillity' is almost fixed, and the Moon's Sea of Tranquillity is where humans first landed in 1969. British writers spell it with two l's; Americans usually write 'tranquility' with one. Both are standard, and students who learn from a mix of textbooks will meet both spellings and should not panic.
組成tranquil + -ity, the ending that turns an adjective into the name of a quality, as in 'pure → purity'.
